Loss surveys is done essentially to find out the quantum of loss as a result of natural disaster, damage due to riots, negligence, accident etc. Based on the quantum of loss other agencies decide on the amount of compensation that is due as a result of the loss. When loss is due to natural calamities for example flooding, earthquake etc. the loss is assessed after a surveys and the Government steps in to pay compensation. When the loss is to individual property, whether moveable or immoveable the loss compensation is borne by the insurance company depending on the type of insurance cover extended by the insurance company.

The loss surveys could be as elementary as assessing the damage to the vehicle after an accident. As a result of the loss surveys, insurance companies decide to pay for the repair of the damaged vehicle. Where the vehicle is carrying cargo, the loss surveys also accesses the damage to cargo and compensation is paid for cargo loss if the cargo has been insured. Similarly when ships carry cargo and the same is lost overboard, the loss surveys assesses the loss for compensation.

At times damage is caused to property belonging to the third party. Invariably a dispute arises on the quantum of compensation that is to be paid to the third party. After a loss surveys by an independent company the dispute is settled amicably as the loss has been quantified and third party paid accordingly.

To sum up it can be safely said that when ever damage takes place the loss has to be assessed and the same is done by loss surveys.
